The 8th of August 2015 marked the occasion of the 73rd anniversary of the defence of Kokoda from the 8th to 10th August 1942 by the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion and the Papuan Infantry Battalion.
At the Commemoration Service, conducted by the Surfers Paradise RSL Sub-Branch at Cascade Gardens, Broadbeach, the PIB NGIB HQ PIR Association made two significant contributions:
Firstly, the Association was represented by Maj. Donald Graham in the Wreath Laying Ceremony.
Secondly, W.O.Peter Jesser, son of Major Harold Jesser MC, made a significant speech which highlighted the important contribution of the PIB to the defence of Kokoda and also announced the unveiling of the PIB Honour Roll Pavers at the rear of the Memorial Wall. It was particularly meaningful that relatives of those whose names appear on the pavers were able to be present.
The Southport School provided the band to accompany the National Anthem and the Hymn. The Cadet Corps from the School has a particular connection with the 39th Battalion Association and students from the School held the banners of the 39th Battalion and the PIB NGIB HQ PIR Association. More significant was the contribution of the cadets and students, mostly PNG Nationals, who read the Honour Roll of both the 39th Battalion and the Papuan Infantry Battalion.
