ANZAC DAY EDITION
LEST WE FORGET

1.    BRISBANE MARCH INFORMATION  (from Secretary/Treasurer Kev Horton)

G’day All,

Once again our Association will be marching in the Brisbane ANZAC Day Parade on Monday, April 25. We will be led by President, Major Don Graham. The Association’s Executive would like to urge as many members as possible to join with us in marching in Brisbane this year.

After the success of last year’s parade, the march will again be commencing at 9.30am with participants requested to be in position by 9:15am. (Usually time for a yarn before we actually get moving.) The Air force will lead the regular march this year with our group marching immediately behind the PNGVR Assn and in front of 1 RAR Association. We have been assigned number 107 position in the Army Section of the march.

We will line up in Group 7, Number 107 position somewhere towards the Southern end of George Street (roughly between Charlotte and Mary Streets) and should be in position by 9.15amfor the march to begin at 9.30am sharp. Our flag bearers, the late Frank Wust’s sons Ian and Noel, will have the Association banner (blue in colour) in position. If you have trouble finding the Assn position ask one of the marshals to direct you to position 107 or phone me on (0418 750189).

Wives, friends etc are welcome to again meet at the “Sugar and Spice” Coffee shop on the northern side of Adelaide Street near ANZAC Square for a coffee and chat and to watch the March.

A reminder that all train transport is free for Veterans wearing medals and for their carer/partner on the day.

Looking forward to seeing as many as possible there on the day. I’ll send out an update closer to ANZAC Day.

Cheers,

Kev Horton   (Hon Sec/Treas PIB NGIB HQ PIR Assn)

4.    A LASTING TRIBUTE TO PNG VETERANS

Pavers 2 Cascade Gardens Paver Relatives Cascade Gardens

Veterans of the Papua – New Guinea battles can be remembered in a lasting tribute at the wonderful Rotary Kokoda Memorial Wall at Cascade Gardens in Broadbeach, Qld. Through a partnership with 39 Battalion Association and Gold Coast Council, you can honour a family member or friend with their name inscribed on a paver, laid beside our larger paver with the PIB NGIB PIR insignia.

There are two types of pavers; the first is placed in the Honour Roll for men who made the ultimate sacrifice in the PNG campaigns. Their surnames are in capitals on the paver. The other type is for veterans of the PNG campaigns. The lettering of their names is in lower case.

As seen above, a main larger paver for the PIB NGIB and PIR has been now been laid along with four individual pavers honouring Sgt Frank Wust (PIB, NGIB), Maj Harold Jesser MC (PIB), Lt Alan Hooper (PIB, ANGAU), and Col. Ian McDonald (PIB, ANGAU and PIR). These were formally recognized at the Kokoda Day Ceremony on Aug 8th 2015. These join pavers laid by the 39th, 2/14th and 2/16th Battalions which are all part of the path at the rear of the Kokoda Monument. (Descendants of these men shown near the pavers in the photo above).

Orders can be placed by completing the order form (with payment details). The current cost per paver is $60 including laying.Orders for 2016 will close on 30 June, 2016.

The monument takes the form of a profile of the Kokoda Track over the Owen Stanley Ranges. The front panel of the profile is filled with scenes that were recorded during the campaign. The memorial pavers are laid behind the structure shown in this photo.
